Internet and network security - Is it important? What do I need to know?

The internet is simply a network of billions of computers which are all joined together in some way and if you have an active internet connection, you are part of that vast network.

So, if you have no internet security - what is stopping someone on the other side of the World or the other side of your town from accessing your computer if they wanted to? Nothing!

If you have no internet security and they know what they are doing and they want to access your files, they will!

But there's nothing on my pc worth seeing & they would attack a company computer before mine!

Wrong, all they see at first is an IP address (a set of numbers) once they have gained entry they may as well see what's worth stealing. Unlike a burglar, they just look and make notes - you would never know they had visited.

Depending on the risk level, you have the options:

A basic software firewall will provide a great deal of internet security and keep the average home user adequately protected - but NOT if it's not configured properly!

If parts of it are disabled or certain ports are left open or if the wrong options were checked when it was installed then it may be giving you a false sense of security and leaving you open to all!

A hardware firewall is a separate security appliance which is designed solely for protecting your pc against internet or network attack & although a lot more expensive, it really is worth every penny.

If you have sensitive data that you need to protect, this should be top of your list.
